Obituary

Gary John Komar

December 4 1941 – January 27 2021

Peacefully on January 27, 2021, Gary Komar passed away due to complications from pneumonia at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg.

He is survived by his daughter Karen (Troy – Jami and Cory), his brother Randy (Maggie) along with cousins, nieces and many friends.  He was predeceased by his mother Freda (1966) and father John (1978)

Gary, who was named after Gary Cooper, grew up in the North End of Winnipeg.  His maternal grandparents immigrated from the German colonies on the Volga River in Russia at the turn of the 20th century; paternal grandparents coming for the Galician region (now in the Ukraine) of Austria-Hungary.

Gary had a long career with the Federal Government in Immigration. During his retirement he was hired by the Abu Dhabi government for a year to help set up new immigration offices and streamline some of their policies.  He had fond memories of these times, with many lasting friendships.

Gary love baseball, travelling, movies, researching and learning all aspects of WWII.  When in his 60’s, he had a standing Wednesday date of dinner and a movie with his daughter Karen, which continued for many years until health issues led to moving in with his daughter and son-in-law in 2019.  This is a time that he treasured as he could spend all day watching movies, CNN and other news outlets.  In the summer he would like to sit on the patio with the sun in his face, content with his life.

We will be having a small Celebration of Life, with cremation already having taken place.
